Alex has been playing woodwind instruments for over 10 years, starting with the Clarinet and Bass Clarinet before picking up the saxophone and flute. Now he mainly finds himself playing Tenor and Baritone Saxophones, Flute, Alto Flute, Clarinet and Bass Clarinet. He is currently studying with scholarship at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama on the Artist Masters Program 2024-2027.
Before Guildhall, Alex studied for four years at Durham University on the Natural Sciences Integrated Masters (MSci), specialising in Supergravity and String Theory. During his time there, he played in symphony orchestras, pit-orchestras, sang in chapel choirs, played in function band and small group jazz bands. Most notably, Alex was the musical director of the Durham University Big Band for 3 years and co-founded and directed the Durham University Jazz Orchestra.
Alex joined the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) Academy Big Band in 2018, directed by Sebastian De Krom. 8 years later, Alex is still performing with NYJO in several of their projects: NYJO 60: Fodder on my wings, NYJO feat. Jasmine Myra, NYJO Blue Note Reimagined, and NYJO feat. Jazz Kayser. Alex also finds himself on the educational side of things, running weekly group sessions for their newest under-18s ensemble "First Collective", introducing jazz, improvisation and a variety of other music to secondary school-aged students.
As a musician himself, Alex understands what performers are looking for from their photos and enjoys working with individuals and groups to capture professional and exciting images both in live performance and natural light portrait sessions.
Alex's interest in visual art extends beyond photography, as he is interested in reactive audio-visual animations and generative art. Click here to see this blending of music and visuals.
